My Mistakes (3): Carrying Extra Speed After a Good Corner

And here we are with Part 3!
I still have plenty of braking mistakes to talk about, but I figured writing about nothing but braking mistakes would get a little repetitive, so today I’m going to tell you about one of my mistakes involving cornering consistency.

When you’re a beginner, you gradually get more and more familiar with the track as you practice, right?
And then, every once in a while, you get through a corner and think, “That was freaking awesome! I nailed it!”
And honestly, it feels really good when that happens!
“This is the result of all that practice!” I’d think, feeling pretty proud of myself.

And then, more often than not, I’d mess up the next corner…
Hey! Don’t get cocky!

But seriously, it happened way too often.
After a corner where I’d gone unusually fast, I’d mess up the next one with a surprisingly high frequency.
It’s not like I was getting cocky, though…
Wait, why?

When I thought about it, the reason was actually pretty obvious.
If I’d gone through a corner faster than usual, I’d also be carrying more speed out of it.
So even if I started braking at the same point as usual before the next corner, I’d be too late.
I needed to start braking earlier.

Wait a minute…
This is a braking mistake after all! HaHa.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who would say, “Of course I already knew that without you telling me.”
But I didn’t…
Once I started paying attention to this after corners that went particularly well, the problem was solved.
“Ohhh, so that’s what was happening. Man, I’m an idiot!”

Lesson Learned

After a corner that goes well, you’ll be carrying more speed than usual into the next one.
